Our new offering, Beginning Drawing Through an African Diasporic Lens, will be led by teaching artist, Lance L. Smith! This class will be a four-week exploration of fundamental drawing techniques through the lens of African Diasporic Sculpture and cloth at the Left of Center Museum Collection of African Art.

Course Goal:
Course is designed to offer a disciplined foundation in drawing concepts based on visual observation.

Course Schedule:

4/19 – Week One: LINE: LINE WEIGHT, MATERIALITY & CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MARK-MAKING
4/26 – Week Two: FORM: STYLIZATION OF THE FORM: FLORA & FAUNA
5/3 – Week Three: REPETITION: MEDITATION OF NATURAL MATERIALS
5/10 – Week Four: VALUE: LIGHT & DARK

Required Materials

  • Newsprint 9×12, 100 sheets 1 pad 
  • or 8.5×11 sketchbook 
  • Drawing Pad, 18” x 24” 
  • Charcoal pencils kit with a kneaded eraser  
  • Blending Stumps 
  • 4B or 6B drawing pencil 
  • Ballpoint or felt-tip pen in black
  • Mixed Media or Watercolor Papers (optional, but recommended)
